What is Motorola doing wrong?

Remember those days when Motorola came with G series first phone, people appreciated the fact that they have a good phone for which customers have to pay less. Motorola evolved and came up with Motorola G2 followed by G3, G4 and G5, suddenly things change after G5 and Company lost its track

Motorola is owned by Lenovo and now Lenovo is facing a difficult time in its mobile division. The company made horrible choices. When they came with G5 Plus, they gave the same processor as G5, which was Snapdragon 625 why? Then Motorola came with G6 line up and they seriously messed up, they launched three phones under G6 line up which were G6, G6 Plus, and G6 Play.

All the products were not targeting customers’ segments. G6 has Snapdragon 450 processor, which is not a good processor if you are selling the phone for more than 15k rs. G6 Plus with Snapdragon 630 for more than 20k rs. Are you serious? which market are you targeting? who would pay 20k for an outdated processor, or they are not bothered about customers at all now.

Selling outdated stuff for more price will never justify the product. The product was a big flop and did not do well in the Indian market, which was their key market. First of all the execution was too late, when companies were selling Snapdragon 636 and 660, Lenovo’s Motorola came with an outdated 630 processor, do not take me wrong, 630 is not a bad processor but obviously not good as 636 and it was dated when it launched with Moto G6 Plus, and they are doing the same execution mistake, when companies are moving to SD 710, 712, company decided to stay with SD 636.

So which market they were targeting? People who do not want to spend more on phones? or people who need a decent performance? or people who need the balance between price and performance? I do not see any of these. Their execution timings are wrong and not at par with market standards in terms of phone’s performance.

Is Lenovo learning from their mistakes? Are they coming up with a good phone? My answer would be “No” Motorola recently announced Moto G7, which will come with SD 632, I understand that 632 is newer chipset of 600 series but still, they could have provided 636 (which has better clock speed), and above all just 3000 mah battery. Seriously, why Lenovo forgetting the concept of good mid-range phones.

Next phone of G7 lineup is G7 Play and Power. Power comes with SD 632 chipset, 5000 mAh battery, and 720 p display. Moto G7 play also comes with 632, 3000 mAh battery and 720 p. So the conclusion is three phones with the same processor, just difference display qualities. why Motorola why? why so much confusion? with these phones.

Why can’t the company just give two decent options instead of confusing with these lineups. Next phone is G7 Plus. The phone comes with SD 636, better camera and rest is almost similar to Moto G7 (except camera performance).

Motorola asking a lot of money for these phones and I do not recommend them just because of their asking price. There are a lot of good options available for this price. It shows that Motorola is not learning from their previous mistakes and keep on doing the same mistakes.

They also did few good implementations as well such as Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for Moto G7 Plus, which is a nice feature considering the mid-range segment. But I feel for around 15 – 20k INR (or ~$ 250 – $300) you can try Poco F1, Honor Play, Redmi Note 7, Nokia 6.1 Plus. Thanks for reading the article and stay tuned for the upcoming ones, Cheers 🙂
