Recently major brands launched multiple phones such as Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Fold, Moto Razer 2, a lot of Realme phones such as Realme X50 Pro and it goes on. A lot of capabilities are enabled in these phones such as 5G, 8k Videos, 12 GBs of RAM and 120 Hz displays and again it goes on. Now the question comes do you really need this much? do you need a lot of features?

Although I agree these phones are great and definitely perform great and driving the industry into the next tangent and evolving the present and moving towards the future, which is definitely required to make our future better. Without these innovations, the future can not be evolved. But again the point does you really need to get these products now. So let’s move to realities rather than focusing on the future.

Samsung recently launched phones with 8k videos capability, 108 MegaPixel camera, 100 Time zoom, 5G Network. Although I really appreciate the efforts but do not think we should get into the trap to buy these phones. These products are very expensive and do not justify value.

If you consider the 5G network, you will hardly find places where the network is 5G, yes there are places in the American Continent where you might find it but it is really far from practical use. And if you spend a lot on the technology which does not have the required infrastructure then it does not make sense.

The major drawback I realized nowadays is the support for these products by companies or major brands except Apple Inc. Companies do not support their products for more than two or three years. For example, Samsung gives software updates to their phones for two years and then the product is obsolete and you may change. What is the point of spending a lot on 5G enabled phone, when required architecture does not exist and by the time it comes (let’s say by 2022/23), your phone might not be supported for the latest software.

The phones with a lot of zoom (I really do not understand the utility), just think once, how many times you will be using the same in a day, calculate the same for 2-3 years and realize the amount you are paying for the same and value you are getting out of this. I know people might argue that we are getting all these features in one phone, which will justify the value, however I will still say, you are not getting any value because anyhow you will not be utilizing the same.

The market is filled with Hype, a lot of mid-tier market-focused companies are launching phones every month. I do not know why? can’t you just launch a few good products and make your customers happy. I know sales figured are going up but making a lot of customers sad. People buy phones and in just a month later a better product comes and people feel betrayed.

These 120 Hz displays, 108 Mega Pixels cameras, I know seems and performs better, but do you think will make any difference on these 6.5 inches phones. You are dealing with a very small screen and it hardly matters. Companies are increasing the phone’s size as if smaller hands people now have vanished and only people with large hands exist. The RAM hype, 12 GB RAM, are you serious? do we practically need this much RAM? Please refer one my article to understand this as well (http://thinkqtech.in/2019/02/13/ram-hype-why-compani%E2%80%8Bes-are-launching-their-phones-with-8-gb-10-gb-and-now-12-gb-rams/).

Companies are forgetting basics, and focusing on these hypes. Please focus on balance, providing an excellent product with reasonable pricing, which Oneplus used to do. I know these products are great and future-focused and surely attract customers. But we are getting far from the values we should get.

There are a lot of products providing great values. With reasonable pricing, providing decent cameras, display, battery, and software experience. Customers should calculate the need from a product and what exactly needs and accordingly should invest. I really feel the Tech or specifically, the mobile industry is Hype driven rather than value-driven. and companies have started focusing on numbers. I really appreciate the research and development are being done by these giants but I also feel these are not being used in the right way or direction.

Let me know what you think in the comment section. Thanks for reading the article. Cheers 🙂
