Android operating system OEM Google still launches phones with 4GB RAMs, wherein other companies launch their phones with higher RAM configuration. Now the trend has changed and companies are launching their mid-range phones with 4 or 6 GB and, flagships with 8, 10 or even 12 GB RAM, one such example is Lenovo Z5 pro which will have 12 GB RAM. Chines manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Oneplus are launching their products with 10 GB RAM.

Now the main questions come, do we really need this much RAM on an Android device? Why companies are giving 10-12 GB RAM? RAM is Random Access Memory, which is a form of Computer Data Storage that stores data or codes currently being used by an application.

So when an application works it takes some space of RAM. Let’s consider if your phone has 4 GB RAM and you open an application which requires 512 MB to perform its takes it will then take 512 MB from 4 GB and the remaining 3.5 GB will be left for other applications.

In the Android ecosystem, to run a decent number of the applications you need 4 GB RAM if you perform heavy multitasking then we can say 6-8 GB RAM is preferable but for a normal user 4 GB is decent and 6 GB RAM is good to have considering the computing power taken by the games nowadays such as PUBG.

Companies have started using excess RAM hype to show customers an incorrect picture of the phones. RAM does not signify the speed of the phone and one should not get confused by hyped RAM configuration. If your phone has 10 GB RAM, it will give the same performance as 6 GB or 8 GB RAM. Processor, Storage, and GPU decide the speed of the tasks or the games.

Companies promote 10 or 12 GB RAM to justify the better performance and customer gets scammed by this. Maybe in future when applications will evolve and computing power will increase, 12 GB RAM might be useful but in today’s scenarios that is highly unlikely and a customer does not need 10 or 12 GB RAM to perform multitasking.

So 10 GB or 12 GB RAM is hyped and one should not take buying decision based on this. Check your needs, consider the processor, check the storage (Prefer UFS storage) and then decide which phone you need .
